Transformers control the amount of power flowing through them, protecting the wires from damage. Even if you put too much stuff on the low side, the transformer prevents too much power from flowing through, and you don''t overload wires. However, if you have a battery on the low side, it will gladly power everything it can, even if that overloads the wires.
